Lately, I have been playing with the new Puppy Linux 5.1 “Lucid”. I booted the live CD on a computer that I’m fixing, and I was really surprised with the new interface and speed.
One of the things I like with this version is the easy way I can install Opera! 😎 In previous version it was pain to install it, so I did mostly stuck with SeaMonkey for a quick live CD ride!
Currently I’m using Puppy Linux 4.21, but I’m seriously thinking about upgrading one of my computers with this version! 😎

The brilliant new Puppy Linux 5.1, code-name “Lucid” as it is binary-compatible with Ubuntu Lucid Lynx packages, has been released. Lucid Puppy 5.1 is a “full-featured compact distro.” It’s a Puppy, so it is fast, friendly, and fun, and it can also serve as one’s main Linux desktop. Quickpet and Puppy Package Manager allow easy installation of many of the best Linux programs, tested and configured for Lucid Puppy. It is just as easy to choose your favorite browser and your language. And it all looks as good as it is, because the core Lucid team now includes an Art Director. Lucid Puppy boots directly to an automatically configured graphical desktop, with the tools to personalize the desktop right at hand, and it even recommends which add-on video driver to use for high-performance graphics. The main emphasis relative to Puppy 5.0 has been to improve the user interface, both to make it even more friendly and to enhance the visual appearance. Also many packages and tools (especially for video and printing) have been upgraded/improved, including synchronizing with a recent release of the Woof Puppy-builder.

ghost writes:I Love this Distro because it is great for older computers, it breaths new life into them and it is so small that it runs in memory at least while I am using the live cd. I just love Puppy Linux. The network connection configuration tool works better to me then the major distro's. People; do not throw out your old PC, just install Puppy Linux on it and you will feel like you are working on a 3GHZ Intel duo. I know that is hard to believe, but just try it. You will be surprised how fast it is. Enjoy! 🙂

Anonymous writes:i certainly like the distro. it's far better for installing programs like audacity, rosegarden than 4.3.1 which i have. however, using a huwei USB modem is a complete PAIN!! it's not recognised at all yet the software (or so i thought) is exactly the same as 4.3.1 which handles it with ease. even if you type in the details manually it refuses to find the modem. this completely destroys the usefulness of the distro for me as the point for me is to use the live disc with a pupsave on USB stick (or chip in the huwei's memspace) so i can bypass my hard disk and leave it unmounted, avoiding trojans, viri and my puter being used for a spam zombiebot; all of this being more prevalent on the net than they were when i started back in 97being a recording artist i can still use the apps previously mentioned but it would be nice if i could upload my songs without having to change operating systemshowever all that being said i think that puppy is the most exciting OS i've seen since OS/2 and knoppix 3.2 and i reckon it has huge potential indeed. i almost gave up on linux when i was trying a live ubuntu and it wouldn't even recognise my HD (a fight with microslop over NTFS apparently) and i thought "what's the use of an OS when it can't even find your disk?"laterz
